We’ve all seen them. The rich college kids at Columbia and other colleges and universities, expressing their outrage over someone or something that in their view has treated someone or something badly. It could be global warming. Or fracking. Or guns. Or running out of pudding in the cafeteria. The list is endless. This time it is the Israeli incursion into Gaza to dismantle the terrorist organization that maimed, raped and murdered 1,200 people on October 7, 2023.
I have always had what I consider to be a healthy distrust of government (and authority in general), and while I respect their right to peaceably protest, I do take exception to these freedom fighters doing so while wearing a mask. It shows that they are courageously willing to illegally occupy public areas and break into locked spaces to show their outrage but only if they are allowed to hide their identities. They are afraid the police and, more importantly, their mommies and daddies might be able to identify them. While some of them might have legitimate medical reasons for wearing a mask, we all know that usually isn’t the case with these pudgy defenders of the defenseless.
Along comes NC House Bill 237, titled “Unmasking Mobs and Criminals”. As written, this bill would reinstate masking restrictions that were in effect up until 2020. That’s when the Chinese unleashed their flu against the rest of the world.
I was completely against mandatory masking during the Pandemic, and I am just as vigorously opposed to making it illegal for those that for whatever reason feel the need to wear one. But I am also against someone committing a crime while hiding their identities from the police. The Democrats are objecting to this bill under the guise that there isn’t language included for health and medical exceptions. The Republicans are pushing back saying that it is not needed.
So what? How hard is it to accept this simple little carve out and insert the needed language to get this passed? Then we could all move on. Also, how about this. Let’s pass this law but also insert language that makes it illegal for our Governor or other officials to mandate or force people to wear a mask, OK?
I am so tired of this crap.
