t has been since November of last year that I’ve put out a newsletter and I was struggling to choose the subject matter. The problem took care of itself last Saturday as I was coming home from picking up a biscuit for me and the wife, of whom I am happy to cater to, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
I stopped to help a turtle cross the road. When I bent to pick him (her?) up, it peered up at me and that’s when I knew what I would be writing about.
“The Turtle” is a term affectionately given to Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell, and I took this encounter as a sign from God. I have written about him before in one of my incredibly insightful articles https://conservativeclearinghouse.net/term-limits-now-please/ in which I lamented his refusal to step down from office despite the beginning of decline, such as instances of falling down and blank stares. If Mitch had listened to me back then and done the right thing I believe he and the country would have been better served. But when your whole existence is tied to the power and position of Senator, ego rules over common sense.
Lately, things have gotten worse for The Turtle and, like you, I was wondering why he doesn’t just check out of the hospital and go home to enjoy the rest of his life? Perhaps he might be needed for upcoming votes such as “Save America Act”, or it might be the legal battle for his position and a possible Democrat replacement, God forbid. Anyone else would have been fired by now. Why doesn’t anyone explain this?
Look, I get it. I admire his political savvy. Especially in regards to the judiciary and the Supreme Court. But that admiration diminishes greatly as I watch him hang on and refuse to grow old gracefully.
Now, with his seat up for election in November and only 5 months left in his political career it seems we are stuck with this feeble old man until January or death, whichever comes first.
He has done very well for himself since being sworn into the Senate on January 3, 1985 ( I’ll do the match for you. That is 41 years. Shameful, isn’t it?). Besides the lucrative perks associated with a seven-term Senate career, he was able to swoon Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, who added significantly to his portfolio because of her family’s shipping business. Together they are worth approximately 35 million, though some sources place it at 70 million.
Mitch could have left at the top of his game but chose to hang on for one term too far. That is what he will be remembered for.
The Turtle is the poster child in the argument for term limits.
